Jeanne Tournier, the bored wife of a wealthy newspaper proprietor in Dijon and mother of a small child, contrives to spend as much time as possible in Paris, staying with her smart friend Maggy and seeing her handsome polo-playing lover Raoul. One day, she is driving home to her mansion when her convertible breaks down on a country road. Bernard, a young archaeologist, gives her a lift in his 2CV. They arrive late at the Tournier's grand house and Bernard is invited to stay overnight. Unable to sleep, Jeanne goes into the moonlit garden, where she meets the equally restless Bernard and they go for a long walk around the estate and take a rowing boat along the river. Realizing they are in love they return to her room to spend the rest of the night in bed together. The following morning Jeanne packs … Henri Decae's magical photography and the tragically moving music by Brahms add emotional intensity and heighten the drama of Jeanne's dilemma.
