The old widow Tweed adopts a young after his mother is killed by a hunter. Meanwhile, her grumpy neighbour Amos Slade, brings home a surprise for his old hunting dog Chief: a hound dog puppy named Copper. Tod, the fox, and Copper soon meet and become great friends, despite grumpy Amos' distrust of a "varmint" like a fox, but he doesn't really want to cross Widow Tweed. Through a mishap, Amos becomes convinced that Tod is hunting his chickens, and sets out in pursuit with Chief and Copper. Tod is found by Copper, who lets him go, and as a consequence, Chief is badly injured. Copper swears vengeance on Tod . And Amos tells Widow Tweed that he'll kill the fox the next time he sees him. Widow Tweed takes Tod away from the only home he's ever known, and sorrowfully set him free in a game preserve, then drives back to her lonely house alone. Amos and Copper head for the game preserve, intent on killing Tod.
