The film is an elaborate parable about the plight of the civilized modern man caught up in the vortex of success. Eddie Anderson is a brilliant advertising executive who seemingly has everything: affluence, comfort, an expensive home and an understanding wife, in addition to a lovely mistress. While he appears to have everything, Eddie feels in his heart he has nothing. Choked with self-disgust he tries to commit suicide by crashing his sports car into a truck. Although he recovers physically, he remains mentally distraught and refuses to talk to anyone..
