Allegedly modeled on Madame Bovary, the story is set in some corner of Russia in a period that time-shifts in deliberately anachronistic fashion between the 19th and 20th centuries. The heroïne, nameless like all the characters, is a high-strung, no longer young housewife given to babbling in French and dreaming of far away places. Bored with her loutish country doctor husband, she channels her creativity into sexual adventurism. With hubby none the wiser this charismatic village eccentric keeps liaisons with various lovers anywhere convenient, including the backseat of a horse-drawn jitney. (Variety 6-9-89)
