‘Salt’ is a simple story about a girl who falls in love with her sister’s boyfriend. Hildur and Svava have lived in a remote town for their entire lives, working in the fish factory and moving through the years in the settled rhythms of small-town life. The calm waters of Hildur’s live become troubled when Sava moves to Reykjavik. Hildur and Sava’s boyfriend, Aggi, do what they can to convince Sava to stay. When Sava eventually leaves town despite their best efforts, Hildur and Aggi and up on the road in a rusty station wagon, aiming to join. An unexpected detour becomes the beginning of a journey of self-discovery for Hildur. This simple story excels for having captured the rawness and beauty of a landscape which influences the character and behavior of the protagonists. Working with non-actors, a largely improvised script and shooting in an intimate, documentary style, Gray immerses us in the precise details of Hildur’s life.
