An aspiring filmmaker travels to Spain's Atlantic coast to meet her biological family for the first time, reopening wounds from a haunted and stigmatized past. In Romería, a poetic and visually vibrant film loosely inspired by director Carla Simón's youth, comfort and reconciliation are found through the power of imagination.
After losing her parents at a young age, eighteen-year-old Marina (Llúcia Garcia) sets off with a camcorder and a head full of questions to trace the contours of a turbulent past. Her unsteady search drifts between family members who constantly contradict one another and fragments from her mother's diary (written by director Carla Simón's own late mother). Romería marks the final chapter in a trilogy in which Simón explores her personal history. While Estiu 1993 and Alcarràs were set in the rural heart of Catalonia, this time Simón moves to Galicia, on Spain's colder, more windswept coast. There, through the scars of a searching generation, she probes a hidden chapter of Spanish history. Though a different wind (literally and figuratively) blows through this film, Simón reaffirms her status as one of the most beloved voices in contemporary Spanish cinema with her third feature.
