Seventeen-year-old Christy has already weathered a turbulent life. When his foster family finally throws him out, he moves in with his older half-brother Shane in Cork. But Shane, overwhelmed by the demands of new fatherhood, has little patience for a rebellious teenager and would rather see Christy gone as well. Against the odds, and despite his rough reputation and troubled past, Christy slowly begins to feel at home and even starts building friendships. In his debut feature – an expansion of his 2019 short – Irish filmmaker Brendan Canty injects a dose of hip-hop energy into the tradition of socially realistic coming-of-age dramas. With deep affection for the local community, Christy emerges as an authentic and unexpectedly funny portrait of warm-hearted people who have drifted too far into the cold. The film is elevated by infectious performances from a fresh, local cast. After The Quiet Girl, Kneecap, and now Christy, it seems Irish cinema is in full renaissance.
