Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed

Edition 2023
104' - 2023 - Documentary - Dialogue: English
Director: Stephen Kijak Composer: Laura Karpman With: Rock Hudson, Illeana Douglas, Kathleen Hughes
The portrait Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed sheds light on the life of AIDS-stricken Hollywood adonis Rock Hudson between spotlight, screen and shadow. A relevant and respectful tribute to a late gay icon.
American actor Rock Hudson was one of Hollywood's biggest stars of the 1950s. The handsome leading man made any woman's heart beat faster, all the while having to keep his homosexuality hidden from the public. When Hudson died of AIDS in 1985, his tragic story helped bring the HIV virus out of the taboo. Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed maps the life, struggles and legacy of the Hollywood (and gay) icon. Alongside tons of archive footage and new interviews, documentary filmmaker Stephen Kijak presents excerpts from Hudson's filmography through the same queer lens as Rock Hudson's Home Movies (FFG2016). The title refers to All That Heaven Allows (1955), the fifth film from his creative partnership with director Douglas Sirk from which his most sensitive interpretations blossomed.
"An illuminating account of a beloved Hollywood icon’s dual life, Stephen Kijak’s archive-rich doc for HBO and Max finds double-meanings in deftly chosen Hudson movie clips and repositions the star’s legacy as an unwitting AIDS activist." - The Hollywood Reporter
