This film focuses on Mr. Chu, a retired Tai Chi teacher who has moved to New York to spend the rest of his days near his only son, Alex. Alex attended an American college, married an American woman and they have a son. Mr. Chu is not a welcome guest. There are problems in particular between him and his daughter-in-law, a writer, who is used to working at home. She finds his presence a constant disturbance, moreover they have no way of communicating with each other. They get on each other's nerves increasingly; Martha finds it difficult to continue writing and her marriage to Alex is put under a lot of strain.
