Tired of one suïcide mission too many, a band of mostly black soldiers flee their sadistic commander. Jessie Lee leads the motley crew that also features smart and compassionate Weezie, strong, dumb and compassionate Obobo, wise-cracking and compassionate Angel and token white (but also compassionate) Little J, They end up in Freemanville, a town settled by free people of color, where Little J's past awaits him in the form of an exbuddy turned sheriff, a guru of sorts and a former sweetheart.
