A quirky rom-com about love in the face of doomsday, Peak Everything follows Adam, a hypersensitive, eco-anxious, and borderline depressed man who finds solace in the soothing voice of a technical support line. Canadian director Anne Émond shows a keen understanding of our modern fears and longings, all while embracing the dry humor that Québecois cinema is known for.
That the Earth might reach its expiration date sooner than expected is a (justified) fear in today's society. But for warmhearted 45-year-old Adam, it has led to an isolated life consumed by panic and depression. Even his psychiatrist rather doodles on her notes than effectively helping him. On top of that, Adam's new therapeutic solar lamp fails to live up to his expectations. Yet the voice of Tina from the technical support line might offer Adam flickers of hope. The end of the world, it seems, can also come with love. In her quirky rom-com, infused with that typically neurotic, dry Canadian humor, director Anne Émond taps into timely existential anxieties while tenderly portraying a depressed man preparing for the end, only to discover he might be at the start of something new. Peak Everything, from the same production company behind the equally deadpan Universal Language, is a gentle disaster movie about the apocalypse happening both outside and inside ourselves.
