Richard Linklater's well-researched hangout movie-meets-buddy comedy offers an irresistibly charming behind-the-scenes look at one of the most influential films ever made. Without ever indulging in intellectual posturing, Nouvelle Vague shows how Godard convinced a ragtag film crew to follow him into the grand revolution of 20th-century cinema. Expect to see a parade of French cinema legends, played by actors who bear an uncanny resemblance to their real-life counterparts.
In 1960, film history hit the reset button. A then 29-year-old Jean-Luc Godard - already casually quoting his idols - sparked a full-blown revolution with his fast, low-budget debut À bout de souffle (Breathless). Godard broke with every filmmaking convention of the time, jolted 20th-century cinema like a lightning bolt, and finally stepped out of the shadow of his Cahiers du Cinéma peers François Truffaut en Claude Chabrol. Plenty of inspiration, then, for American director Richard Linklater - the nostalgic mind behind Boyhood and the Before trilogy - to take a charming, light-hearted look at how Godard an his often dumbfounded crew pulled off this guerilla-style production. Newcomer Guillaume Marbeck is the spitting image of a young, rebellious Godard, and shines alongside Zoey Deutch's playful take on Jean Seberg. Don't expect a highbrow docudrama - this is witty hangout movie and buddy comedy, where a whole parade of legendary French film figures makes an appearance. Nouvelle Vague proves that cinephilia can be quite contagious.
