Lockhart’s film was shot in real time and with a fixed frame. She cast a farmers couple whose choreographed movements create a developing perspective. They begin at the back of the picture plane forming piles of hay in vertical lines towards the foreground. When they reach the front of the picture plane, they then begin to move backwards, spreading the hay across the field in an even coating. The result is a choreographed version of their daily work. Perceptions of the landscape change subtly over time with changes in light as the sun sets and the movements of the figures, resulting in a real-time landscape painting.
