Arnold Schoenberg was a profoundly religious man and regarded his art as a kind of priesthood. "Moses and Aaron" is the key stone in his work. He approached the subject of this opera from two points of view: he considered it as both a religious and as a national drama. "Moses and Aaron" is the drama of the Jewish people, the chosen people which finds the greatest difficulty in accepting and coming to terms with its chosen status. This film was initially made for television and specifically aimed at an audience which could no know the opera from any theatrical presentation.
