The hero of this bittersweet tale is Benoit, who views the ebb and flow of human activity from behind the broom at his uncle's general store. Among the vast of characters influencing Benoit's perception of life are the lecherous store clerk Fernand, Benoit's cousin Carmen, and the formidable Uncle Antoine, the alcoholic proprietor of the store who will play a vital an terrifying role in the climactic event, the delivery of a corpse in a coffin during a blinding blizzard, that terminates Benoit's period of idealistic innocence once and for all.
