Somewhere in a large European city, during the first confusing throes of the Second World War, a young idealistic writer, Roberto, who is being followed by the Secret Police, finds sanctuary in a luxurious brothel. Roberto hires the most expensive suite and chooses a girl called Luba to go with him. During the long hours in hiding overnight from his persecutors, Roberto and Luba fall in love. And sometime in the night, the Secret Police arrive at the brothel and install themselves outside to wait for Roberto. Luba and Roberto decide to begin a new life together. Bravely, the following morning, they leave the brothel...
