The feature debut by award-winning shorts director Urška Djukić is a sensual and tender coming-of-age drama, focusing on an introverted girl's sexual awakening during a luscious summer spent in a convent. Dubbed "the Slovenian Sofia Coppola," Djukić seamlessly blends pubescent hormonal confusion and religious opposition in this heavenly version of Call Me By Your Name.
The English title Little Trouble Girls may be borrowed from the repertoire of rock band Sonic Youth, but Slovenian director Urška Djukić’s debut begins with a deep sigh—or rather, with panting. Are these just the breathing exercises of the Catholic girls’ choir that protagonist Lucia belongs to, or is something else going on? The suggestive sound design sets the stage for a sensual coming-of-age story in which a sixteen-year-old wallflower is confronted for the first time with her sexual desires. Sultry choir-mate Ana-Marija unsettles Lucia, as does the handyman working at the crumbling convent where she lives. And then there is her faith, which only heightens the turmoil in her body. Little Trouble Girls explores, with tenderness and a fresh perspective, the intersection of burgeoning sexuality and religious constraint. A Slovenian Call Me By Your Name with a heavenly soundtrack.
