A rich, sensuous but bored woman married to a busy newspaper owner seeks excitement in Paris. But her husband becomes suspicious. As she returns home, she meets a young man and invites him to stay the evening. That night they realise their love cannot be denied and, after spending the night together, they drive away. This bold and poetic portrait of love was Louis Malle's first film. It is a lyrical and erotic satire, which Truffaut called "the first night of love in cinema" presumably because of its semi-nude love scenes. These beautiful erotic scenes (which could have been scabrous but are always modest) caused a scandal in its day, contributed greatly to the film's success, made an international star of Moreau and much money for the producers.
