The international press proclaimed Leila's Brothers the best film of Cannes 2022. Through the ups and downs of a family, director Saeed Roustayi paints a staggering portrait of Iranian society.

Leila's four brothers are all fighting to stay afloat in a ruthless society. But no one fights as hard as Leila to ensure her family's survival. The country she lives in is Iran, where corruption has a grip on every level of society. From the factory manager whose business has to close because he ran off wit all the money, to the toilet attendant who makes his customers pay double for a toilet visit. How do you survive in such a community? By stomping down, her brothers think. For example, one of them wants to sell cars without actually delivering them. "It's not a scam," he claims, "it's a job." Although it is Leila who really takes care of the family. Actions speak louder than words. Sublimely interpreted by Taraneh Alidoostie (who featured in four Asghar Farhadi films), the actress is the heart of this colourful and at times epic family drama.

“The weight of tradition and family ties gets a riveting work-out in Leila’s Brothers, a continually surprising deep dive into the dynamics of a poor and honest Tehran family struggling to keep their heads above water. Excellent performances anchor this gripping drama about gender and succession in Iran.” - Screen Daily
