1942. Bernard Granger joins a theatre company in Paris managed by Marion Steiner.Marion is the wife of a famous stage director, the Jew Lucas Steiner, who is hiding in the cellars of the theatre. Marion and Bernard star in his latest production. An old friend, Jean-Loup Cottins, who has useful connections with the German administration, has taken over the direction of the play. Watched unceasingly by a pro-Nazi critic called Daxiat, Marion has to behave much more prudently than Bernard, a member of the resistance, who actively continues the struggle against the enemy. After a successful opening night, Bernard, exasperated by a provocative review written by Daxiat, is involved in an incident which forces him to make a clear-cut decision.
