This film is an enchanting, magical, original fable paralleling the stories of wealthy Raimondi building a "temple of happiness" circa WW1, and a conference on alternative education at that
site in the present day. Resnais and screenwriter Jean Gruault beautifully illustrate that there
are no simple solutions to problems, that those who impose their ideas of perfection on the
world are just as dangerous as those who cause disorder. Resnais so enjoyed working on the
film that, in effect, he extended it by collaborating again with Gruault and developing a story
around four of the actors from La Vie est un Roman. (Leonard Maltin)
