Born from the cataclysmic 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, this immersive journey follows Kesuma, a castaway struggling to survive on a remote island. As isolation and nature reshape his world, reality gives way to something dreamlike and elemental. Rich in sound and atmosphere, the film becomes a sensory meditation on humanity’s fragile place within the natural world.

In 1883, the volcano Krakatoa erupted on the East Asian island of the same name in the Sunda Strait. The bang that accompanied it is the loudest ever recorded, audible from 4700 km away. Five months later, a large part of the island had been swallowed by the waves. That historic event is the starting point of Krakatoa, the new film by Spanish experimental director and visual artist Carlos Casas. The protagonist is the reserved Kesuma, who is flung into the ocean when his raft is caught up in the eruption and washes up on a lonely island where he tries to survive. His struggle against nature nonetheless transforms into a psychedelic trip through which Casas explores humanity's fragile bond with our planet. Albeit in a way that you have to hear, feel and see, more than understand. Featuring superb sound design by Nicolas Becker, who won an Oscar for his work on Sound of Metal.

Warning: Contains strobe and flashing lights. Unsuitable for photosensitive epilepsy.
