One evening, the old writer thinks back of his days in the thirties, when he, like every American intellectual of his days, went on his 'pilgrimage' to Europe. In Paris, he meets Alfred, who takes him to the decadent parties at Sebastien's, a rich follower of Oscar Wilde and a cheat. The Melody bar will become his head­quarter and it is the place where he will meet various gins. He meets Nys and is tempted to fall in love, but he still has a lot to learn.
