Amjad Al Rasheed

Inshallah a Boy

Edition 2023
113' - 2023 - Drama - Dialogue: Arabic
Director: Amjad Al Rasheed Composer: Andrew Lancaster, Jerry Lane With: Mouna Hawa, Hitham Omari, Yumna Marwan
Through the painful fate of a young widow, debuting Lebanese director Amjad Al Rasheed indicts his country's gender inequality. A gripping account, albeit not without humour.

Earlier this year, Inshallah a Boy was the first Jordanian film ever to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival. A beautiful accomplishment, but what makes the film really special is its theme. When Nawal's husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her with a young daughter, everyone initially reacts with empathy. But then she gets embroiled in a legal battle with her brother-in-law. In his feature debut, Amjad Al Rasheed criticises this blatant inequality and shows that women in Lebanon are determined to end misogyny.

“A widow fights against powerful patriarchal laws in the first Jordanian film to play at Cannes. Inspired by the real-life experiences of a close relative of director Amjad Al Rasheed, Inshallah A Boy delivers a social realist critique of Jordan’s structural oppression of women and girls.” - Screen International
