Goutam Ghose
Hungry Autumn
A report made with modest means on famine in India, more specifically in West Bengal. The film traces the causes and a statement by the US delegate to the World Food Conference in Rome (in 1974) does point to the fact that things do not happen "just like that" and that the blame should be shifted onto all sorts of sacred cows: "Food is a weapon and it will be used as such in negotiations". Goetam Ghose's HUNGRY AUTUMN already revisits this "traditional" situation in the Third World: Western development aid is only provided if it keeps the authoritarian regimes rigidly in power. The poor can quietly go to hell.
