Josephine, the 7-year-old daughter of a clergyman, is all alone in a smiling summer landscape. She is bored because she has no one to play with. Her parents have no time for her. She ambles about in her lonely world and broods over such difficult-to-understand subjects as God, whom her own father, after all, does represent. Later, she starts school and meets Hugo, an unusual little boy about her age. A friendship -verging on life's first delicate infatuation-develops between them, and together, they explore the adventurous world of childhood, where fantasy and reality are so closely interwoven.
