At long last re-discovered, Richard Massingham, was a director of very inventive and witty short films and in those same films a marvellous comic performer with a strong sense of the absurd and surreal. He created a persona that anticipated the bumbling, creative eccentricity of a Mr. Bean and worked within the rich vein of surreal humour that passes on to the Goons and Monthy Python. He was an inventive and adventurous director working experimentally in the marginal genres of the instructional film, trailers and adverts.
