Makbul is born under the sign of the elephant. He is a mahout, or elephant trainer, who lives with his father Sabu in the forest. When an elephant calf named Vikrama is born, the animal is placed under Makbul’s care. The boy raises and trains the elephant, and they become inseparable companions. When his father dies, Makbul takes his place, and assumes the responsibility of his father’s work with the forestry department. However, industrialisation and downsizing within the industry mean that the work done by the mahouts and their animals will soon be phased out. One day a truck arrives and Makbul knows what will come next: Vikrama is to be sold, and he has no say in the matter…
