Ragnar waves goodbye to his lively, lovely wife Ellen who embarks on a trip with some friends. Unfortunately, Ellen dies on foreign shores. Distressed and lonely, Ragnar receives a little box containing Ellen's ashes. He places the ashes in a beautiful urn and plans to lay his beloved spouse to her final rest under the lilac bushes near the “Spring of Joy”, their summer cottage. Together with his son Mick, a very justifiably unsuccessful rock musician and his son's young net-stockinged girlfriend, Catti, Ragnar attempts to transport his wife to her final resting place. Their trip proves to be eventful in and of itself, and it does - in the best sense of the phrase - have a happy ending.
