Their mother died unexpectedly while giving birth to Garnet and it took the heart out of their father, Ed. A decent man who feels deeply, he has spent the last eight years living on the surface of feeling and connection. He does bend and puts food on the table, but he careful to keep himself emotionally distant from both his kids and his new girlfriend, Barb. An awkward, isolated eight-year old, Garnet mutely examines the world he inhabits with an unblinking, puzzled intensity. Aimless an fearful, he struggles to comprehend the world around him/ Garnet's sixteen-year old sister Flower, who had cared for him like a mother since his birth, is finding the task an increasingly impossible burden. Warm-hearted an pretty, Flower is parched for tenderness and affection. She takes the first chance she gets-in the form of het new boyfriend, Carl- to escape the oppressive silence if her home and her increasingly troubles brother's attachment...
