Blacklisted screenwriter Asa Kaufman flees the U.S.A before he can be summoned to appear before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee (HUAC). After settling in London, he teams that his best friend, actor Clifford Byrne, has committed suicide. Searching for clues to the mystery surrounding this tragedy, Asa tums to Clifford's ex-girlfriend, British political activist Sarah Aitchinson, with whom he begins an affair. Asa hears that the actor named names before HUAC. His doubts are further inflamed when he finds out that left-wing psychotherapist Jerry Leavy is In Europe on a lecture tour...
