Alexander, a noted Greek writer, is preparing to enter the hospital. “When the pain becomes unbearable,” the doctor had said to him. He’s been putting his papers in order. Tomorrow he’ll be leaving the old house by the sea where he has always lived. He finds some letters from Anna, his wife who has been dead for a long time, and he realises how much she loved him. It was a love that he had taken for granted. The memories come flooding back. Alexander’s chief regret is that he’s never completed anything to his own satisfaction. He’s been working on the last unfinished work of a 19th century poet but this must now be put aside. As he drives through the gloomy streets of the city, Alexander crosses the path of an Albanian boy who has fled his country
