Did Generallissimo Franco have a double ? The supposition that he could have is the basis for this flight of fancy toplining the Argentine thesp Pepe Soriana. The story has a Madrid shopkeeper who sells prosthetic equipment kidnapped by Franco's henchmen. After clipping his hair, pasting a moustache on him and training him in the personal quirks and mannerisms, the henchmen oblige the bewildered double to take Franco's place in official ceremonies. His wife, who believes she is now a widow, tries to communicate with him via spiritualistic seances when to her surprise the double slips away one night to visit her. Thereafter, he returns to live out his years in Franco's palace, hut he Iets her know, when it is he who appears in the newsreels and not Franco, by touching his ear. (Variety 23.3.88)
