After the death of her mother, Diana’s father bans love throughout the kingdom. Ignoring his decree, she sets off in search of Lalo, the man she longs for, travelling through parallel worlds along the way. What starts as a fairy-tale romance unfolds into a wildly imaginative journey where reality, fantasy and the unexpected constantly collide.
The title already gives it away: Donkey Princess is a fairy tale. But a fairy tale of a kind you rarely get to see. The Chilean directing duo Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, with a background in stop-motion animation, take Charles Perrault's Peau d'Âne (Donkeyskin) as their starting point but turn it inside out. The donkey princess' name is Diana (no, she has nothing to do with Lady Di), who is at loggerheads with her father over the man she has her eye on, Lalo. Following the death of his wife, the king has, in fact, imposed a ban on love. Diana cheerfully ignores this and journeys through parallel worlds in search of Lalo. Donkey Princess begins as a forbidden romance, but soon transforms into an extremely imaginative quest through time and space, in which live action, stop-motion animation and surreal imagery blend seamlessly into one another. A wild, cinematic trip from an exceptionally talented directing duo.
