A handful of people - somewhere in the South West of the USA. In the middle of the desert two highways, the Southern Pacific railway crosses a couple of dirt roads which come from god knows where and which lead to nowhere. A gas station, a snack bar, a garage. In the skeleton of an old derrick a box for Joey's projector. Over the road the tattered screen of the drive-in cinema. Mountains of scrap. A stone's throw away lies "Lorraine's", the brothel. A series of dreary mobile homes pushed close together against the heat of the sun, like a fortress of automobiles. That is all. Ramshackle, not built to last. The remains of two families who managed to escape the terror of the Nazis in 1938 are stranded here. On their flight they kept moving westwards. Finally they stopped here. Ada and Martha, with their children, here, in this godforsaken place. (pressbook)
