Govert Miereveld, a failed lawyer, is a teacher in a girls school. Although married, he Is secretly in love with one of his pupils, Fran. In vain, he tries to approach her. Years go by. Govert fails the exams tor the Bar and becomes clerk of the court. A well known police physician invites him to assist with the autopsy of a drowned man. In the hotel where they stay he meets Fran, now a famous actress. They talk all night. Fran smashes the idyllic image Govert has of her to pieces. She wants to die. She more or less asks Govert to kill her. He shoots her ...
