Haixia searches for her birth parents, who abandoned her on the day she was born. She lives in the rural impoverished village of Yan’an, in the yellow highlands in China. She wants to know why she was born and left. Her parents are former Red Guards ‘sent down’ from Beijing to Yan’an during the Cultural Revolution. Her passion to find them reveals realities of those days and forces the Red Guard generation to confront their hated past. Huang Yuling, a former ‘sent youth’, helps Haixia to reunite with them. His strong sympathy comes from his own painful experiences he went through himself under the relocation program, having been found guilty of a counter-revolutionary crime. After 30 years since then, Haixia and Yuling set out on their journey to the truth.
