Disillusioned by the decay of Britain, a civil servant, John Deacon Is persuaded to. transfer to a small town in Africa. He soon discovers that his new home is peopled by other disillusioned expatriates who have created a mini-Britaln on the banks of a deep and dark African river. He forms a relationship with the daughter of the club chairman, Lydia Priestly, who uses Deacon's worldly wisdom to boost her own confidence and advance her own social progress. One of the first conquests bred by her new-found self assurance Is Deacon's best friend, who loses Deacon's savings in a hare brained scheme for exporting ostrich feathers.
