“Daddy Cool” creates its own giddy world of vengeful siblings, televangelist, mad scientists, schlocky 50’s horror movies, 40’s noir films and much more. The gender-bending story pictures Roxanne born as Roger and as the son of a kiddie-TV-scientist who later became televangelist. She now hates her father, though she still lives across the street from the house where she grew up. Lately she’s begun to see her past, and her future, appear on her TV set. Her psychologist, Dr. Talbot, is the ultimate loner and a werewolf that wishes to stop snacking on kittens. Lewis infuses the film with his own skewed sense of humor and quirky fantasy. This results in a wholly original film that continually surprises and entertains. In essence a film about confessions, it takes its magic from an era when filmmakers had to be sneaky about what they wanted to say by using only what they could show. And the message: a scientist should never commit crimes against nature.
