A dysfunctional rural family struggles to live the American Dream in a country that's being sold off by quick-buck and opportunistic developers. The patriarch, Weston, is a middle aged man who spends most of his time drinking. His wife Ella is fed up with him. Their two teenage children, Wesley and Emma, both struggle to get on with their lives notwithstanding the peculiarity of their parents. Eventually, each family member is forced to confront their demons in search of their personal freedom and happiness. This film is Beresford's adaptation of the critically-acclaimed stageplay by Sam Shepard.
