The debut as director of the celebrated cinematographer Willi Behnish results in an unique experience: tortuous and fascinating, arid and hypnotic at the same time. ‘Cantate de las cosas solas’ is a succession of long takes, off voices, intertitles tending to poetics, metaphysics, existentialism, and sounds edited in post-production. It is a non-narrative film, in the first person, which raises questions about looking and the impossibility of going beyond the visible. The camera is here a thinking tool. Between the direct registrations of the urban and nature, the author’s documentary, surrealism and intimate diary, ‘Cantata de las cosas solas’ results as a rare kind of new Argentinean cinema.
