This engaging documentary, directed by Cuban-born actor Andy Garcia, pays homage to the legendary Cuban bassist and composer Israel (Cachao) López, the man who created the mambo and had a major influence on salsa and jazz music. It sketches the history and traditions of Cuban music, concentrating on Cachao's contribution to world music. The meat of the movie is a live performance by Cachao and an all-star orchestra assembled for a Cachao tribute Garcia organised in Miami, last year. The film cuts back and forth from loose rehearsal sessions to the concert itself, splicing sequences so that we hear the same tunes they play in rehearsal and in concert.
