Terry Clark is a bigger kid than his teenage son and he's crazy about 50's Rock 'n Roll. Although Buddy sometimes finds him an embarrassment, he adores his father and would dearly love to get his parents back together. He takes his mother Carol to a Rock 'n Roll meeting. It all ends badly, however, when Des King, an old mate, tums up with some stolen goods, Terry Is arrested and put in jail. Encouraged by his friend Julius to play the guitar seriously, Buddy finds a way to communicate with his father... Terry listens with growing excitement to his son's recordings and dreams of Buddy becoming a star.
