Nothing is quite what Amir expected when he finally arrives in the new country after being smuggled there in a vegetable crate. He is obliged to share an abysmal makeshift lodging with
18 other illegal immigrants. The men there are so afraid of being discovered that they do not
even dare to switch on the electricity. In spite of this difficult beginning, Amir manages to find
a job and, slowly, he begins to take heart. But his peaceful existence comes to an abrupt end
when Hussein Shah, who seems to rule the roost among the immigrants, picks up a white girl
and brings her back to their lodgings. At first Mary brings a ray of sunshine into their gloomy
lives but things get complicated when it transpires that Mary is pregnant...
