Birta (9+)

Birta is worried when she hears that her mother has financial problems. There might not even be money for a Christmas party. Unless 100.000 Icelandic króna comes in. With a big heart and with the help of her little sister, Birta wants to lend her mum a hand. Director Bragi Thor Hinriksson and his screenwriter-wife Helga Arnardottir wanted to tell a story about the financial struggles of single parents and the impact they can have on children. There is still a lot of shame involved, especially when a child - in this case Birta - has to play sports barefoot because there is no money for new shoes. Birta is a warm family film. One that is set around Christmas, but doesn't have to be a Christmas film. "Because", says the filmmaker, "you can watch my film all year round, but during the holiday season even more!"

A story about a young girl who worries about her mother's financial problems (and Christmas!), Birta is a warm family film on single parenting told through the eyes of a particular Icelandic eleven-year-old with a big heart. A Christmas tale to be embraced all year long.
