Hejar is a 5-year-old Kurdish girl. She goes to live with relatives in Istanbul after her parents are killed in fighting between the Turkish army and Kurdish PKK rebels. The relatives are then killed in a police raid in Istanbul. Only Hejar escapes and is taken in by a neighbor, a 75-year-old retired Turkish judge. The girl cannot speak Turkish, and the authoritarian judge objects to the use of Kurdish in his house. He is a typical representative of the state who doesn’t tolerate any language other than Turkish. However, his views do slowly change.
