With All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White, Nigerian filmmaker Babatunde Apalowo delivers glowing, independent queer cinema. His moving feature debut deliberately resists cruelty and taboos.
All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White - winner of the Berlinale Teddy Award - is more than a little reminiscent of The Last Black Man in San Francisco, but Nigerian filmmaker Babatunde Apalowo quickly carves out his own path in his debut feature. Using a subtle but controlled colour palette, he delivers a film that turns its formal simplicity into a strength. In the static frames, the reluctant characters seem part of a moving backdrop, swaying to the rhythm of Lagos, Nigerias oldest and busiest city. Photographer Bawa meets the earnest delivery man Bambino. With every click of Bawa's camera, the desire between the two men grows. But what do you do with these feelings in a country where heteronormativity violently dominates? Apalowo's queer city symphony is as heartwarming as it is confrontational.
“Apalowo takes the title of his film at its word. Using an unobtrusive colour composition, he tells a restrained and tender story of two men who become close in a society in which same-sex sexual relations are considered taboo. A sensual and politically important film from Nigeria.” - Berlinale
