Charles Chaplin

A King in New York

105' - 1957 - Drama, Comedy - Dialogue: English
Director: Charles Chaplin With: Charles Chaplin, Maxine Audley, Dawn Addams, Oliver Johnston, Harry Green, Phil Brown
Shortly after his exile, Chaplin produced what must be the most autobiographical of his films, "A King In New York". In this film Chaplin plays King Shadov, a dethroned Ruritanian monarch who finds himself having to move from his country to america during a revolution. A formerly beloved king, he is led by an advertising agent into making commercials and becomes a TV celebrity. He encounters the culture of America in the mid-fifties : television (complete with commercials), plastic surgery, rock and roll, passports, and is suspected of being a communist and called for the un-American activities committee. This (anti-American) film was unseen in the US until 1973.
