Hungary 1956. The "year of revenge" after the uprising of 1956. Ferenc Gergo, who was not an activist during the uprising and therefore did not escape to another country, sits on death row as a result of circumstantial evidence and because he refuses to sign a declaration of loyalty. He remembers that shortly after Stalin's death, his friend and colleague Sandor Wagner was arrested for his alleged activities as an informant and died in prison. Ferenc married his widow Zsuzsa.
