A giant spaceship is en route to Jupiter manned by astronauts Bowman and Poole with three colleagues kept in state of hibernation and a new computer HAL 9000 in overall control. HAL deliberately causes a failure and when Poole goes outside the ship to repair it maroons him in space. Bowman attempts a rescue but HAL terminates the life functions of the hibernating crewmen and refuses to let Bowman back. Bowman forces his way in and , disconnecting HAL's memory banks, reduces him to impotence. Arriving at Jupiter he is sucked into a new dimension...
